Lawn fertilization and weed control services can help your yard shine during summer.

Both fertilizing and weed control will help promote healthier, stronger grass and ample, consistent growth. Fertilizing your lawn helps to ensure the soil maintains a solid level of nutrients needed to sustain healthy growth. Weed control will remove unwanted plants that steal crucial nutrients, of which should be reaching grass plants.

Do I need to fertilize my lawn?

Yes! In order to have a healthy lawn, vigorous and regular fertilization is recommended. Fertilizer can be that extra push your lawn needs to be its best.

You may particularly want to consider calling an expert to fertilize your lawn if you notice a poor thin lawn, yellow spots in the lawn or disease / fungus issues. Yellow in lawns can indicate soil problems, fungus or insect damage, or a lack of nutrients, including nitrogen, which fertilizer can help to provide and remedy, in many cases.

How often to fertilize lawn grass

It is recommended to fertilize around four to five times per year, twice around the spring season and then twice again near fall, and one to two more times during the summer months. Follow the steps below for great results.

When to fertilize lawn grass

1.       Fertilize your lawn between late winter and early spring.

2.     Fertilize again in late spring (approximately 4-5 weeks after the early spring application) when the grass is beginning to turn a lighter green. This means most of the nitrogen is used up from the early spring application and is ready for more.

3.       Fertilize again in summer, checking for insects, fungal issues, and crabgrass.

4.     Fertilize in fall any time after Labor Day to ensure your lawn is getting proper nutrients to prepare for winter dormancy.

5.     (Optional) Fertilize in mid to late fall if you want to push your lawn over the top and help gain an early green-up in spring.

It is recommended to use a type of slow-release fertilizer with at least 25% stabilized nitrogen for best results. Other nutrients may need to be added into your fertilizer program depending on soil type, location, or other environmental situations.

How to control weeds in your lawn

In order to completely eradicate a weed from your lawn, you must remove it completely, including the seeds. Yes, you can use old-fashioned hard work and hand-held tools to accomplish this. Or you can correctly treat lawns with the proper chemicals or integrated pest management practices during the peak season for whatever type of weed you're dealing with.

How often should I control weeds in my lawn?

How often should I have my lawn treated?

This is a question that depends on your lawn. But, generally speaking for Wisconsin lawns, a liquid herbicide application in spring and fall should control most weeds in a lawn.

Some varieties of weeds will need to be controlled during summer or in between these recommended applications. These “summer annual” weeds can be tough to control as they often grow when lawns are not able to be treated properly.
